During my time at Textbroker, I’ve seen quite a few forum discussions about managed clients. Many authors are reluctant to write for such clients, citing reasons ranging from delays in payment to a high rate of revision requests. I do understand these concerns, but I believe that authors who actively avoid managed clients are missing out on some great opportunities.

I’ve outlined — and answered — some of the common complaints voiced by other authors about managed clients. The next time you see an order from a managed client, don’t be afraid! Take some time to review the positives of writing for managed clients. You just might find that extra boost you need in order to get ahead at Textbroker. 

I have to wait more than four days for my orders to be approved. 

We’ve all seen the orders that warn us that approval may take more than four days. If you’re trying to meet a weekly earnings goal, the idea of waiting more than 96 hours for payment might be discouraging. However, keep in mind that not all managed clients take days upon days to approve orders. 

Many managed clients have staff ready to review and accept orders as soon as TB editors clear them and send them to clients. Many managed clients are also willing to pay authors more than they would make in the OpenOrder pool, meaning that you might have to wait a few extra days but can also enjoy increased earnings. Don’t forget that managed client teams often offer a steady stream of work. 

I can’t make heads or tails of the directions on managed client orders. 

Some managed client orders come with lengthy, detailed instructions. While they might be off-putting at first, detailed instructions shouldn’t keep you from writing orders. If you carefully follow client instructions, you are likely to avoid revisions requests. You may also stick out in that client’s mind and earn DirectOrders you wouldn’t have received otherwise.

On occasion, you might find that client directions are unclear. Remember that each managed client works closely with a member of Textbroker’s client services staff. All you need to do is email the client’s contact at Textbroker and ask for clarification. The folks at client services make a point of responding to questions about managed client orders quickly. They’ll provide the assistance you need to decipher complex order instructions. 

Revision requests on managed client orders are frustrating.

Managed client orders are first reviewed by a member of Textbroker’s editorial team and are then reviewed by the client. This means that you may receive revision requests both from an editor and the client. Try not to be discouraged by revision requests. Instead, focus on the opportunities this review process presents. Remember that if you carefully review order directions and seek clarification, you are likely to avoid many revision requests.

I like to think of receiving revision requests from a Textbroker editor on a managed client order as Get Out of Jail Free card. Editors have pointed out AP style errors and grammar errors in my work for managed clients. And guess what? I didn’t get dinged in ratings for those errors! I had a chance to learn new AP rules and to correct grammar mistakes I made on a regular basis. When you receive revision requests on managed client orders, you’re really getting a chance to improve your writing skills without any risk to your star rating.

Managed client orders receive an N rating, so they don’t help me improve my ranking at Textbroker.

Managed client orders receive an N because they’ve already been reviewed by a member of the editorial staff. Authors who are working hard to move up to 4-star or 5-star status often avoid managed client orders because they receive N ratings, which won’t raise your ratings average. However, this isn’t always a bad thing. 

You may not get a numerical rating on managed client orders, but you do have an opportunity to stand out to the staff at Textbroker. Consistent, excellent work on managed client orders can earn you a recommendation for 5-star status. It can also result in clients being referred to you when they need to place DirectOrders. 

I’ve seen a handful of posts on the forums that suggest that no one gets 5-star recommendations from writing managed client orders, but I can assure you that isn’t true. I received my recommendation for 5-star status from working diligently on managed client orders. I’ve also written dozens of DirectOrders as a result of relationships I built while working on managed client orders. 

Many authors have voiced concerns this week about a general slowdown in orders. As we head into August and early September, many of us will be working around the clock to grab available OpenOrders. Don’t forget that managed clients tend to offer steady work at times when there is little else being posted on the boards. Forging relationships with managed clients can help to keep your order queue full during otherwise slow times.

Managed client orders present you with opportunities to build relationships with Textbroker staff and clients. Instead of pooh-poohing these sometimes-complicated orders, give them a shot the next time you see these orders on the boards. Working for managed clients can go a long way towards helping you achieve your advancement goals at Textbroker.

WOW. I can see how this change could benefit some, but at the same time it causes me a great deal of concern. I've been at a 4-star rating since day 1 and I'm suddenly feeling a little panic/fear at the possibility of being demoted to a 3 based on this.

The concern I have specifically is word count. In order to deliver the best possible content, I often exceed word count. On one specific occasion, the client had a total of 71 product descriptions with instructions to write 40-50 words for each of these 71 products. However, the order specified a TOTAL word count of 1,000. Clearly impossible, but I had accepted, already worked with this client previously and decided to just go ahead and deliver the content that was thousands of words over.

Instead of rating us using your previous method or this new method of "correctly following instructions" (which, I assume, still means 5 stars isn't a possibility without an invite and aced proofreading test?) why not take into account the ratings our writing is given by the ACTUAL CLIENTS themselves??

Apologies if I sound a bit miffed, but… well.. I am a bit miffed. Sorry for that unexpected little vent– it's not something I *ever* do!! 🙂
