Your Brand Has an AI Visibility Audit. Now What?
An AI visibility audit can tell you a lot about how your brand appears in AI-generated answers. It can show which prompts mention your company, which competitors appear more often, what sources AI systems cite, how your brand is described, and where important visibility gaps exist.
But there is a problem with treating an audit as the strategy itself:
Knowing where you’re invisible is not the same as knowing how to become more visible.
For some prompts, that may mean improving your website. For others, it could mean digital PR, original research, customer reviews, or stronger product information. For questions involving recommendations, comparisons, troubleshooting, or firsthand experiences, Reddit may deserve a closer look—but only when those questions overlap with genuine Reddit conversations.
What Does an AI Visibility Audit Tell You?
A typical AI visibility audit provides a snapshot of how a brand performs across a defined set of prompts and AI platforms.
Depending on the audit, that might include:
- Brand mentions
- Citations and cited sources
- Visibility across priority prompts
- Competitor visibility
- Sentiment and positioning
- Accuracy of brand descriptions
- Differences between AI platforms
- Topics where the brand is absent or underrepresented
This information is valuable because AI-generated answers can influence how people discover, compare, and evaluate brands. But an audit still represents a measurement exercise.
Results can vary depending on the platform, prompt wording, location, personalization, retrieval behavior, and timing. A brand that appears for one version of a question may disappear when the wording changes. A source cited frequently one week may receive less visibility after a model or retrieval-system update.
So the first lesson is simple:
An audit tells marketers what AI systems are currently saying. It does not necessarily explain why they are saying it or what the brand should do next.

Why Visibility Data Does Not Automatically Become a Strategy
Imagine an audit reveals that a competitor consistently appears for an important product-comparison prompt while your brand does not.
That gap can have several causes. The competitor may have stronger third-party coverage, clearer information about a specific use case, more customer discussions, or a larger collection of firsthand reviews. Your own product information may also be outdated, incomplete, or associated with the wrong use case.
Each cause points to a different response. Outdated information might require website updates, while limited third-party authority could make original research or earned media a priority. Weak or negative customer sentiment may call for community participation or changes that address the underlying concerns.
An audit identifies the visibility gap. Marketers must still determine why it exists before deciding which channel should be responsible for closing it.
Where Does Reddit Fit Into an AI Visibility Strategy?
Reddit is particularly interesting because it contains something that conventional brand content often struggles to reproduce: conversations between people who are trying to solve real problems.
Users discuss products, services, competitors, frustrations, purchases, technical problems, and personal experiences in their own language, including:
- Firsthand experiences
- Candid comparisons
- Product objections
- Troubleshooting advice
- Recommendations
- Pros and cons
- Alternative solutions
- Unmet questions
- Category-specific expertise
Research and reporting around AI search have also highlighted Reddit’s unusual visibility. In May 2026, Semrush data cited by The Verge found Reddit was the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s Gemini and AI Mode among the domains analyzed.
Recent reporting has documented attempts to create promotional Reddit posts that look like ordinary user recommendations, prompting backlash from communities and moderators concerned about astroturfing.
The lesson is not that Reddit is a shortcut to AI visibility. In fact, the more valuable Reddit becomes as an information source, the more important authenticity becomes.
Start With the Prompts That Matter Most
If a client already has an AI visibility audit, there’s no reason to start from scratch. The existing audit should provide the starting map. Rather than monitoring hundreds or thousands of prompts indiscriminately, begin with a selected group of commercially and strategically important questions.
For each prompt, ask:
1. What is the intent?
Is the user looking for a recommendation? A comparison? A technical solution? A product category? An explanation? The intent determines what kind of information is likely to be useful.
2. Which brands currently appear?
Look beyond whether your brand is present and take time to examine who wins visibility and how they are represented.
Are competitors positioned as affordable? Reliable? Easy to use? Best for professionals? Better for a particular use case?
3. What sources influence the answer?
Look at the sources being cited and the kinds of information they provide. Are they official websites? Review sites? Publications? Research? Forums? Reddit discussions?
4. Does Reddit actually contain relevant conversations?
Look for Reddit conversations that reflect the intent behind the prompt rather than simply searching for mentions of the brand.
A prompt such as “best software for small businesses” may translate into dozens of much more specific Reddit conversations that may reveal information that traditional keyword research misses:
- Which tools have people actually used?
- What software did you switch away from?
- What is the easiest platform for a small team?
- Which product has the best customer support?
- What are the hidden costs?
- What happens when something goes wrong?
5. What kind of evidence does the question require?
Some questions benefit from firsthand experience while others require authoritative sources.
A question about a regulatory requirement, for example, may call for an official government source rather than a Reddit thread. A product troubleshooting question may be much better answered through community experience.
The goal is not to force every prompt into Reddit but to determine where Reddit naturally belongs.
Turn Relevant Gaps Into a Reddit Strategy
Once the relevant conversations have been identified, the next step is deciding what (if anything) the brand should do.
A strong Reddit analysis should help determine:
- Which subreddits contain relevant conversations
- What questions customers repeatedly ask
- How the brand and competitors are perceived
- Where useful information is missing or outdated
- Whether users are receptive or resistant to brand participation
- Which topics the brand has genuine expertise to address
- What account and participation approach fits each community
- Which opportunities should be avoided
A strategy should be capable of saying no. If the only way to insert a brand into a conversation is through a forced promotional comment, the opportunity probably is not worth pursuing.
Reddit communities have their own rules, expectations, and cultures. Users can be highly sensitive to marketing that disguises itself as ordinary community participation.
A credible strategy therefore asks: What can this brand contribute that would genuinely help this conversation?
That contribution could take several forms: developing an account over time, answering relevant questions, participating through subject-matter experts, providing educational information where community rules allow it, monitoring sentiment, or escalating recurring customer issues internally.
The objective is to help before selling.
AI Visibility Requires a Coordinated Strategy
The bigger opportunity is to stop treating AI visibility as a single-channel marketing discipline. A brand’s representation in AI-generated answers can be influenced by many types of information across the web.
That means teams working on the following should not operate from completely disconnected strategies:
- Website content
- SEO
- Digital PR
- Social listening
- Customer reviews
- Subject-matter expertise
- Product information
- Brand reputation
- Community participation
Each channel contributes something different, which is much more powerful than asking every channel to chase the same AI citation.
Move From Visibility Data to Meaningful Action
The rise of AI-generated searches has created a new measurement challenge for marketers.
Brands need to understand where both they and competitors appear, which sources influence answers, and where important gaps exist. Still, measurement alone does not create visibility. Strategic value comes from translating those findings into action.
For Reddit, that means going beyond an AI visibility report to investigate the conversations behind the prompts, understanding the communities involved, identifying customer questions, objections, sentiment, and knowledge gaps and determining whether the brand has something genuinely useful to contribute.
A strong Reddit strategy can include prompt-focused research, brand sentiment analysis, subreddit and conversation discovery, human-led participation, community-aware recommendations, and ongoing measurement.
Most importantly, it can connect Reddit activity with the client’s broader AI visibility work instead of creating another isolated marketing initiative.
When Reddit is the right channel, success will not come from planting brand mentions and hoping an AI system notices them but from participating in the conversations where customers already seek advice—with useful information, genuine expertise, and a long-term commitment to being part of the community.
